Paving the way for a greener aggregates industry

Aggregate Industries is a major manufacturer and supplier of construction and building materials such as aggregates, asphalt, cement and ready-mixed concrete. The company is a large energy user, and they have trail-blazed the introduction of sustainable working practices in their industry. Their goal is to generate 25% of the electricity used at Aggregate Industries sites from their own, on-site renewable sources, placing their company at the forefront of renewables use in the construction industry by 2020.

At their Erith site in London, Aggregate Industries contracted EWT to install and commission a DW54-500kW wind turbine. EWT successfully integrated the wind turbine in the factory’s energy systems in order to power the factory works. Of the 1,314 megawatthours per year that the turbine generates, just over half (54%) is needed to meet total demand. Surplus power is sold to the local network. Earnings of their power purchase agreement are re-invested into the business, resulting in substantial energy cost savings.
