What are microgrids?<\/h2>\n

Microgrids are local energy systems that combine different kinds of distributed energy resources. For example, diesel generators coupled with wind turbines, or solar and wind energy combined. Microgrids consist of components such as energy generators (e.g. wind turbines), energy storage, loads and control equipment. These systems can be connected to the main grid, but they can also operate isolated off-grid. Microgrids are being used for different applications such as off-grid communities, islands, hotel resorts, university campuses, industrial plants, etc.<\/p>\n

The importance of integrated energy solutions in the future: saving energy costs and security of energy supply<\/h3>\n

High energy users are increasingly looking for cost effective alternatives to their current high-cost energy solution. In regions with attractive wind resources, on- or near-site wind generation is a (more) competitive alternative to the current utility-scale electricity supply or diesel generator power systems.<\/p>\n

In these distributed wind applications, the wind turbines can operate grid connected where (part of) the generated electricity is used for onsite consumption through net metering or the wind turbines can be integrated with off-grid diesel systems in order to establish fossil fuel savings. Therefore, integrated energy solutions can offer constant access to reliable and cost effective energy sources, both on- and off-grid.<\/p>\n

EWT wind\/diesel a perfect fit<\/h3>\n

The energy production of EWT’s <1MW turbines: DW52\/54 \u2013 500kW, DW52\/54 \u2013 900kW and DW61-900kW matches the energy consumption profile of many off-grid high energy users such as communities, islands, industrial sites like mines, water treatment plants, etc. Many of these off-grid high energy users are currently being powered by diesel generators systems which are very expensive to operate due to their remote location. Hybrid wind\/diesel power systems offer a cost-effective alternative and achieve an exceptional fossil fuel saving. EWT has gained experience with hybrid wind\/diesel power systems which have been deployed in Alaska.<\/p>\n
