Furrowland Ltd, a family-run poultry business near Newton on Trent, has diversified by building large scale vegetable cold storage facilities at their farm. The cold storage facilities are maintained at a temperature of 1 degree Celsius for the short and long term storage of tens of thousands of tonnes of quality vegetable produce such as potatoes, onions and cabbages. Approximately 1,800 megawatthours of electricity is needed per year to power the storage facilities, chicken sheds, offices and workshops.
Furrowland proudly hosts EWT’s 100th 500kW wind turbine in the UK. It generates on average 1,615 megawatthours of electricity, covering the farm’s demand for just under 90%. By generating such a large amount of the required electricity on-site, the farmers have been able to future-proof their business against predicted increases in energy prices, increase the security of their energy supply, lower reliance on fossil fuels, reduce their energy bills as well as their carbon footprint.
