Clean energy for a clean water supply

United Utilities is the UK’s largest listed water company, responsible for supplying three million households and 200,000 businesses with clean, clear water, and then removing it. This large undertaking requires a substantial amount of energy. At United Utilities’ waste water treatment works site in Fleetwood, England, 7% of electricity needed for the process is supplied by an EWT DW54-500kW wind turbine.

The wind turbine generates approximately 1,970 MWh per annum, almost all of which is used on-site. It has been operational since 2015, replacing up to 700 tonnes of the greenhouse gas CO2 every year.

Energy had been identified as the company’s second biggest operating cost, only exceeded by staff wages. The EWT wind turbine is set to save the company £150,000 for each year it is in operation, expected to be 25 years. Because United Utilities has achieved to decrease their operating costs, their customers are able to enjoy cheaper bills too.
