EWT’s DW54-500kW wind turbine at Mains of Woodstone Farm near Montrose generates on average 1,700 MWh of electricity every year. The power is used for their poultry sheds, which house about 32,000 chickens and consume a large amount of electricity to provide ventilation, lighting, automated feeding and egg packaging.
The farm also operates a grain dryer during the harvest season, which has been converted to be able to use electricity supplied directly by the turbine. This reduces the farm’s electricity bills and the amount of diesel used on the farm even further. Any surplus electricity is sold into the local grid network, generating even more revenue.
Mains of Woodstone Farm enjoys another benefit associated with the wind turbine. Increasingly, retailers and supermarkets are giving priority to suppliers who make direct use of renewable energy. By having on-site wind energy generation, the farmers can be confident in the knowledge that retailers will welcome their products.
