Reducing a poultry farm’s energy costs by 75%

From £40,000 down to £10,000 per year.
That is what the Megginson family from Kirkburn Grange Farm in Driffield, Yorkshire, are paying less for their energy since they had a EWT wind turbine installed at their farm. Of the 1,650 megawatthours of electricity generated by the turbine every year, about 20-25% is used at the farm. The rest is fed into the local grid network, for which the Megginsons receive a guaranteed power price as well as a feed in tariff.

The wind turbine’s electricity is used to power a wide range of the farm’s diverse operations, such as energy intensive heating, ventilation, lighting and feeding in poultry units, cold storage of potatoes, a grain dryer and the broiler farm. By achieving energy cost savings of 75%, the wind turbine has made a substantial contribution to securing the viability and future sustainability of the farming business. It has also provided future protection from projected increases in energy costs.
