Outperforming the competition by making a farm carbon neutral

Rufford Forest Farm is an agricultural business near Newark. Among other things, they grow rye for Ryvita Crispbread. EWT got called in to replace the farm’s existing wind turbine, a different brand which disappointed in power output due to availability issues. EWT installed a state-of-the-art DW54-500kW machine, generating over 7 times their 220 megawatthour electricity demand per year.

Since its commissioning in September 2014, it has reliably provided the farm with renewable energy to power their farming operations. 20% of electricity is used by the farm; the rest goes into the local network. Compared to the same period before, it has saved Rufford Forest around £10,000 on their electricity bills.

Based on energy consumption and fertiliser usage, the farm used to have a carbon footprint of approximately 250 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per annum. With an annual power output of 1,630 megawatthours on average, enough to replace approximately 885 tonnes of CO2 every year, the EWT wind turbine offsets their carbon footprint more than three times over.
