EWT installed a DW54-500kW wind turbine at the site of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s recycling centre in South Wales. The Council set up renewable energy company Merthyr Renewable Energy Ltd in order to run the wind turbine.
Only a small amount of land is required for the installation of a wind turbine. By using an industrial, brownfield site like the Merthyr recycling centre, no agricultural land has been taken up. Prior to the turbine’s installation, the land was being used for the storage of scrap metal and cars.
The wind turbine measures 77m to the tip of the blade when it is in a vertical position. It generates on average approximately 2,200 megawatthours per year. All generated electricity is fed directly into the local grid network.
During construction and operation of the turbine, operations at the recycling centre have been able to proceed without any interruptions.
Alan Davies, Project Manager at Merthyr Renewable Energy Ltd commented: “EWT were a joy to have as a supplier, they kept us informed throughout the whole project and delivered on time. We have used EWT on more recent projects and will continue to use them on future ones.”
