Securing the future of a comprehensive poultry business

Poultry farm K-Fresh near Hull produces eggs and processes, packs and distributes them to their customers. It also grows and processes their own grain which is then fed to the hens. Decreasing sale prices and increasing pressure from retailers to improve environmental performance made K Fresh decide to install an EWT DW54-500kW wind turbine.

Out of a total 1,900 MWh per annum, approximately one third of the energy produced by the EWT turbine is used on-site by K-Fresh. The rest is sold into the local grid network. Consequently, K-Fresh has been able to operate more efficiently and with lower operating costs.

The electricity is used to power the most energy intensive aspects of the farm’s operations, such as the farm’s unique Enriched Colony caging systems. The wind turbine reduces the farm’s energy costs and provides a reliable, alternative source of income. This way, the turbine provides a buffer against predicted rises in fossil fuels and reduced income from the sale of eggs and poultry products.

“The positive impact of the wind turbine will hopefully enable us to continue increasing our workforce, and allow us to expand” Chris Kirkwood, owner K-Fresh
